You can choose what recording to watch and some allow you to skip commercials
The VOD recordings often have unskipable commercials while the DVR version can be skipped.
The main networks, CBS, NBC, ABC and FOX often don't let you watch the DVR version and force you to the VOD version with unskipable commercials. It is annoying. If you start the show while it is still recording though, you will still be allowed to skip commercials.
