The unnecessarily, over-analytical response...
The Utah DC position is an immediate step towards an HC position. The Utah OC position is neither a great stepping stone or a destination center. As a result, KW has been creative trying to get ambitious up and coming OCs from internal or the FCS ranks.

To hire an FCS guy, you want to hire the guy making waves...putting up 600+ yards of offense and 40+ points. You don't scour the FCS ranks looking for someone that is helping his team win 20-17.

Inehrently, you get guys who like innovative, throw-first offenses against less sophisticated defenses. Those guys bring their schemes and cute playbooks to a completely different strategy at Utah. The disconnect has driven KW crazy.

He wants to hand off the offense and finds himself constantly getting involved.

Ludwig is the perfect fit. He's been around forever. He's not looking to Utah as a stepping stone. He gets KW. He wants to win. He's used to prepping strategy against SEC schools with DCs making 7-digits and have 8-digit budgets to research everythihng about your team, your play calling, your players' tendencies...ad nauseum.
