Keep in mind, CoachSpeak and his takes comes from
the old school BYU mindset and paradigm from the WAC days. This is where BYU had better coaches, better schemes and better talent than anyone in the conference. Even their 2nd and 3rd string QBs were superior to most of the conference.

Credit BYU for that. But it created this set of expectations that 9 and 10 win seasons were the norm, and even sometimes disappointing.

That gets passed on to over reaching expectations for Utah in the Pac-12.

For every season at Utah, 4-5 games on the schedule will be against better programs with better athletes, often at tough road venues. Another 4-5 games against comparable teams that are slightly better or on par in terms of athletes and competitiveness. With 2-3 weaker opponents that Utah is expected to win.

Any margin for error — key injuries, poor calls, bad bounces — and 2-3 losses are inevitable. Even for strong teams.

For most of CFB, an 8- to 9-win season under these circumstances is great. A 10- or 11- win season is stellar. For Utah to have averaged 9 wins over the last 5 years is fantastic. To build on that and to be looking forward to a season as favorites to win 10- or 11 games is amazing. A great accomplishment in itself.

Because the preseason hype is reflecting the perception of the Utah brand and its consistency punching above its weight.
