the cinematography? I realize the subject matter may be fascinating and some of the lines have become classic, but I hated all the dark rooms and the ponderous dialogue.

It's certainly no ethical dissertation or review of an epic adventure, no review of a great or of great individuals. You'd have to classify it as a anti-hero movie. I don't get its appeal, too dark, and the scenes are literally too dark.
