Wow. I guess that is one way to look at it. Another way...
would be to see BYU - specifically the 1984 championship - as the first factor in what led to the establishment of the BCS (intended to keep "lesser" schools with better records out of the NC), which excluded both BYU and Utah until Utah became the first "BCS buster." BYU didn't pave the way for Utah - BYU was one of the main thorns in the big boys sides which led them to create the BCS, which Utah then busted and earned its way in thanks two the two perfect seasons. Blue/red goggles can really change the way history looks. To each his own though.
