If it seems odd, that means he expects something different. That something different is the idea that for some reason, Koy should be treated differently than he currently is, solely because he's "the OC's nephew." That is preferential treatment. It doesn't have to mean you're treated better than others, but if you suggest better than he currently is, because he's a nephew, that's preferential treatment.
Take that little part of the sentence out and it's much better. His status as a family member has absolutely nothing to do with the playing time or chances he deserves. Maybe he didn't intend for it to sound so ridiculous, but that's basically what was said.
