Rivera was grandfathered and able to wear Jackie Robinson's retired 42.
Rivera was was wearing it before it was retired, and kept pitching for a long while after. Seems like we could make an exception along those lines.

Considering he is honoring his dad, a BYU legend, an exception should be made

True!!! Trey would rather wear #5 - his number

I hate retiring numbers.

It's cooler to have a tradition of great players wearing the same numbers

That's a coincidence, not a tradition

Which isn't possible if you retire jersey numbers

It's cooler to do it, but much less cool when you're copying someone else

Agree. I hate that we don't see those number so anymore.

I hate it, too. It's unsustainable, as the Boston Celtics are discovering.

That just means your standards for doing it are too low

We just need to add another digit

Even better: add a letter. Then you would have 26 possibilities for each number

When BYU started to retire "numbers", I thought they stated they were actually

That's a better way to do it. Or like the Suns, who have a "Ring of Honor"

Bronco changed that policy. Nobody has worn 9, 14, etc. once they were retired.
CaliWG

But they were retired as jerseys not numbers so that policy could be undone, no?

Correct. BYU retires jerseys. Bronco thought players should avoid wearing

There were a few numbers that had already been retired

What does it even mean to retire a jersey but not the number?

They've done it in the past. Matt Berry, Corby Hodgkiss, Jordan Leslie...

Retiring #s doesn't scale long term. It should be symbolic.
