The vast majority of people who drink or indulge in premarital sex do not treat children this way, nor do they live their lives in a way that creates this type of abuse and suffering for children. There are almost certainly many other, much more serious and deeply-rooted issues that caused the difficulties in Neal's childhood.
I think that non-Mormons often resent Mormons for this type of judgmental, accusatory logic and worldview, which flies in the face of what most people experience. It's a bit like looking at Ted Bundy, Josh Powell, and the Lafferty Brothers and concluding that Mormonism leads to violent crime.
