Michigan has so much good stuff to do
I'm a homer, I'll admit that right away. I've lived here for 4 years now. Previously lived in California (bay area), Provo, Boise, and Phoenix. I love it in Michigan. I love the four seasons, as previously mentioned the bad part is the late Winter after the holidays (February and March). And even then the winters aren't bad (in Metro Detroit). I do miss the mountains, that is the one thing I really miss besides extended family. Anyways, some of the great things in Michigan:
Sleeping Bear Sand Dunes (which has at times been voted the most beautiful place in America):

The whole M-22 highway through traverse city, Sutton's Bay, Leelanau, etc. is incredibly beautiful. The cherry vineyards and beaches are a site to see. Every beach along the Lake Michigan side of the state is beautiful

Mackinac Island is another great and highly rated vacation spot:

Tons of lakes and boating throughout the state (obviously)

Detroit institute of Arts is a top notch museum

Henry Ford Museum and Greenfield Village

Great pro and college sports in Michigan (Ohio does as well, but I think Michigan has them beat). Metro-Detroit is a tremendous sports area and one of the only ones that has all the big 4 professional teams and a top tier college football team.

Metro Detroit has great cities and tons of culture and history. The suburbs are some of the nicest towns you will ever be in. We live here:

and there are tons of other great cities (Bloomfield (where the temple is), Birmingham, Grosse Pointes Canton, Novi, Northville, Plymouth, Troy, Royal Oak, etc).

And then there is Detroit, always referred to as the worst part. And I have to agree that the majority of Detroit (land-wise/neighborhoods) is in shambles and I'm not sure how it will recover. That said, the downtown area is on the up and things keep getting better and better. I work downtown and love it. Tons of great restaurants, all four sports sports teams are downtown starting next season (Pistons are moving back downtown into the new Red Wings arena opening next year to Join the Lions and Tigers), great concert venues and lots of businesses, buildings, and stores are filling the place up. Rental and condos downtown are at filled the max occupancy, they need more to be built. I spend a lot of time downtown (and in midtown) day and night and have always had a great time. Here are a couple projects that are on the horizon as long as Detroit doesn't get in it's own way (which is always a concern ):

Dan Gilbert (quiken loans) and the Ilitch family (own little casears, red wings and tigers, Mike Ilitch just passed away) are the two main groups that have been buying up and pumping new investment into downtown along with others groups. Good things are happening.

I'll stop rambling but I love it here. It is an amazing state.
