And it is somewhat more understandable when we are playing in SLC.
My party and I were repeatedly, and aggressively harassed while walking into the stadium by shirtless fans (probably intoxicated) jumping up in our faces yelling F You. F BYU, F Joseph Smith. There were banners hanging from inside (and outside) the press box that were derogatory of Joseph Smith and of Mormons. There were numerous seemingly stadium-wide fan chants during the game that were of the same vain. Ironically, their AD at the time was LDS, as well as 2-3 players on their team.
It was an opponents stadium, and we were the guests, so you take it in stride. However, an experience like that doesn't help the reputation of a school, its fans, or engender feelings of camaraderie with their fan base.
I have been to many of the away games in recent years, and the fans were always at least indifferent: TCU, Oregon St, UCLA, Washington, Cal; and in some cases were unexpectedly inviting and friendly: Ole Miss, Florida State, Oklahoma, Notre Dame.
Arizona was also surprising as it was in a class shared by only one other team.
