That's an economic or social standard not unique to the Church
There's always a need in the human condition for humans to feel superior to others for whatever reason. It's really apparent in economic situations.
We live in California in a very affluent area where a small area of our elementary earns less than $150k a year compared to everyone else which the median is probably around $300k.

The people in my area really feel the more affluent are typical snobs and feel rich people are too elitist. The affluent people feel their mello russe (a second property tax) pay for us to go to "their" schools and feel we're not carrying our weight in fundraising.

It's the same way in other areas like in college football.
