sad story, but the criticism of heaps was on the field related. that's all fair.
i don't think that there was much in personal attacks towards him, as there were for who replaced him.

it's also important to remember that there is more to 'his' story than just what he's telling the newspaper.

in addition, he isn't the first player to deal with adversity during his playing days. in fact, there are many more kids with stories much worse. regardless, the field should have been his sanctuary. i think of cam newton. the guy was in the middle of a heisman race when his father was being investigated by the ncaa. if they would have found anything, newton would have been suspended. but like newton said, the field was his sanctuary. it was there that he could forget all that was going on outside and just play.

good luck to him. i hope the field becomes his sanctuary.
