Rice was a career assistant that had been coaching for

years without a coaching offer. He interviewed for some mid-major school and wasn't even offered the job. He wasn't a candidate for a dumpster fire at Utah that year. UNLV's budget problems have not been a secret. Rice was given a really low salary when he was hired, which also shows you how sought after Rice was as a coach.
