Women 100 years ago still died in childbirth. Infectious disease killed or maimed lots of children. Polio was a major killer.
Men worked hard and long hours. The work was very physical, and working conditions in coal mines and factories led to accidental deaths or death from black lung or other diseases.
Smoking was common and the link between smoking and cancer wasn't known until the 1950s.
Worrying about what will kill you in your 70s or 80s wasn't a big concern back then.
