"Figurehead" may not be the best way to define what he was going for

A figurehead implies no involvement. He gave up the DC coordinator role of play calling and x's & o's level duties to get more involved with the offense, to bring the mentality he had established on defense to the other side of the ball. That's not being a "figurehead" but rather looking for a way to get more involved.
