Very few people thought Bronco would be a good HC when he was hired, he wasn't even the first choice. Bronco became a good HC and helped BYU get to a new level. However, he has failed to get to the next level beyond that. We have to be content posting 8-10 win records against crappy competition or we have to "Risk" changing and get us to another level.
Its impossible to predict who is going to be a great coach and who isn't. If you could pick coaches that are better than others, nobody would hire a bad coach. We could hire Andy Reid and not have him work out on the college level. We could hire coach Peck and have him turn into another Art Briles.
The real question is, Do we want to go to the next level bad enough to take the risk? ABSOLUTELY!
Finally I have heard from several people that there is no such requirement for the Head Coach to be LDS. The only place I have ever heard that is from people here on CB. I could be wrong but I think that is a made up requirement from people here. If it isn't a requirement, there are coaches out there who would be good that can keep people in line. One only has to look at Charlie Strong. Texas is a dumpster fire because Charlie Strong is changing the attitude and culture, not just worrying about football. In two years I think Texas will be ranking in the top 5 again.
