As always a few of those don't translate well with out qualifiers
Others have no way someone could respond to favor Bronco.

First, look at the names below his on the east stands. - how many players under Bronco (assume they were as good as those under LaVell) could even qualify to have their names up there at this point - most are not far enough removed by time or done playing professionally - I'm with you that I don't think there would be as many (if any) - but we also haven't had enough time pass to be sure.

Second, look at the halftime show and who we honored during our USU disaster. - we could some day honor someone great from Bronco's days (Taysom, Ziggy or KVN maybe? or someone who hasn't even suited up yet) granted they wouldn't have had 70+ NCAA records...then again some of those others we've honored haven't had that many either...

Third, look at the two endzone seatings that didn't exist when he became coach. - expansion was done after LaVell's 10th season...yeah I got nothing as a qualifier here - absolutely zero expansion talks right now during Bronco's 10th season...

Forth, go look at the Heisman and NC trophy. - won in year 13 and 19 is it possible someone wins one or the team does? We were really hopeful for possible Heisman this (10) or next (11) under Bronco...

Fifth, look at the individual and team NCAA records established under his coaching. - honestly can't think of any individual or team records for Bronco and LaVell's teams had many before the end of their 10th year and they continued to grow.

Sixth, look at the coaches he had under him to went on to coach in the NFL and elsewhere. - how many of them were within the first 10 years? This is also an area that requires more time for certainty but at this point past and current on staff don't give any confidence it would suddenly become spectacular under Bronco.

Seventh, look at the streaks established while under his tenure. - no clue if Bronco has any positive or significant streaks (16 wins in a row spanning 2007-2008; LaVell had 17 spanning 1980-81 in their first 10 years - LaVell's longest was 25) - I do know he has never had a 5 game losing streak and LaVell did...

Eighth, look at the bowl games he qualified for. - this is a thing that is by no means Bronco's fault...He had several years where his records were plenty good enough to have gone to the Holiday Bowl if the contract hadn't been lost with the creation of the MWC and the taking over of it by BCS conferences. The fact that Holiday, Citrus, Cotton, Fiesta were even available as a WAC conference champ with 1-2 losses was a product of that era. With the crappy bowl contracts Hair got for the MWC they were always doomed regardless of record (unless a perfect record and selected for a BCS game) to a crappy bowl in comparison to the Holiday...

Ninth, look at the QB Factory he built (which has since then been shuttered). - zero ability to respond here - defenses in certain years have been pretty darn good though

Tenth, BYU, including our current staff are still riding on the coat tails he established (our ESPN deal "foot in the door" was due to the program Lavell made desirable to ESPN. - zero ability to respond here...

Side rant - not addressing you or your points above anymore:
I still don't know that either way it is enough for comparison sake to throw one out with the bath water and worship the other when looking at just their first 10 years.

That said - way to much of the world today (even old guys like me) are becoming very much instant gratification; what have you done for me lately, social network connected, etc....

I personally remember having to write a hand written letter buy a stamp and mail it to a girl I liked that moved a way and wait a week or 2 for her to respond. Long distant phone calls were extremely costly, email didn't exist, text messaging didn't exist and we were excited to read a tiny summary and stats in a tiny box score in a local paper about our Cougars. Just being able to see a box score was exhilarating way out here in the Midwest....

That is not good enough for anyone today and I'm positive this has a lot to do with the angst. Others controlling the football landscape have changed the rules and are taking the lions share of all the money and people in this instant gratification world we live in have zero patience and would rather a head coach with a very good record (I'm not saying elite) be shown the door in the middle of a season regardless of the injury toll. I'll have a bit more patience - wait and see how the season plays out - a new coach today likely won't help us win tomorrow anyway (although Bronco calling the D might ) so let's see how the season plays out and then maybe only his contract if he stays past that.

BTW - also not sure if you saw this I put together - no qualifiers, just trying to get a hold of my own feelings/perception with it: http://www.cougarboard.com/board/message.html?id=13159515
