Historically almost every single one has been bad (Hudspeth basically being the only exception, although he was also eventually fired) while the inside hires have been good to great. It's not a guarantee, but it might indicate that the uniqueness of BYU plays a role, and having someone at least spend a little time as an assistant here first can probably help them understand a few things that are unique to BYU. Crowton was a disaster and we can't afford another crash in the program like that.
