He is a good coach, but the program has grown stale. The luster of going to two BCS bowls and joining the Pac 12 have worn off. Moreoever, the constant questions about being fired are having a negative impact on recruiting.
Beating BYU cannot be good enough for Utah. Utah cannot consider a losing conference record and a victory over BYU anything close to a success. They must focus on conference wins. BYU should be an afterthought.
Utah needs a guy that knows the Pac 12 and can recruit California. If I were them, I would go after Jeff Tedford next year. The guy is one of the best recruiters in the country and always put together great offenses at Cal.
