I run a Thurs night group with 4 other guys (2 are on CB). We meet weekly and decided to try a board game tournament. Winner gets free dinner paid by the other four.
We each chose a 5p board game to play 5 times in a row, with one practice session before each game was played 5 times. At the end of each game, the first place player got 7 points, 6 for second, and so on. Whoever scored the most points out of the five games got an extra point to their total.
The five games were Power Grid, Res Arcana, Castles of Mad King Ludwig, Automobiles, and El Grande. When possible we added in expansions with each new play.
Our next game night is the final night we play El Grande and only two of us have a chance to win: Myself and one other. I have a 2 point lead, so as long as I don't lose the final game by 2 spots or more, I win outright. Anyway, my purpose in sharing is that this can be a great way to get some games played more than once and introduce some meta gaming into your game night because even when you don't win, getting 2nd or 3rd gets you more points, so placing well still matters.
Please comment below about how much you hate board games, even though you clicked on this and still read through my post. That way I can make fun of you.
