Their more recent tournament history is far less successful. Since 2014 (which is an arbitrary starting point by me to make their recent history in the tourney look bad*):
2014: #5 seed, upset by #12 Stephen F. Austin in first round (L)
2015: #7 seed, upset by #10 Ohio State in first round (L)
2016: #10 seed, upset #7 Oregon State (W), lost to #2 Oklahoma in second round (L)
2017: #10 seed, lost to #7 St. Mary's in first round (L)
2019: #8 seed, lost to #9 UCF in first round (L)
2021: #10 seed, forfeited to #7 Oregon in first round (team sick with Covid) (L?)
2023: #12 seed, lost to #5 St. Mary's in first round (L)
1 win in the NCAA tournament since 2014, 9 years ago. Not saying they aren't a good team this year or that BYU is just going to fly by them, but if we're worried because of BYU's history in the tournament, I think VCU fans should feel the same way given their last decade of tournament results.
*After their incredible run in 2011, VCU had one win in 2012 (against Wichita State) and again one win in 2013 (against Akron). So since their Final 4 run, they've had 3 NCAA wins and haven't made it out of the second round, but have had a very impressive 9 tournament appearances. BYU in that same stretch had 5 tournament appearances and 1 win in the play-in game against Iona in 2012.
