Here's what we know: 1) We know what Sam Leavitt said (video below). 2) We know
that Crew Wakley and Dallin Leavitt studied film together during the season (Crew transferred to BYU from Utah State) - this has been confirmed by at least one credible source. These two facts are enough to suspect that it was more than just coincidence that ASU torched BYU's league-best defense in the first half.
There wasn't really a good reason for Sam Leavitt to have the level of confidence that he had going into the game.
What we don't know from reputable sources includes:
- Were specific audibles and gameplans discussed?
- Did they talk about the ASU game at all?
- Did Dallin ever possess a download of film that was intended for BYU players.
- Did the BYU coaches know that Wakley was talking to the brother of the QB for the team BYU was playing in its biggest game in 40 years? And if the coaches knew, then surely they would've stopped it, right?
- Was Wakley just stupid, or was he trying to actively sabotage the team he was playing for (the team that wouldn't give him a scholarship)?
- When was Wakley told he wouldn't be on scholarship next season? Was it before or after playing ASU?
- Did ASU coaches know that Sam Leavitt had some insider info on BYU's defense?
- Who was recording BYU's locker room at halftime (this is a separate event, but it was shady)?
But even lacking all of the details, what Crew Wakley did was at best incredibly stupid, and at worst it was almost criminally malicious.
