I'm not a huge Xs and Os basketball expert, but this is what I'm seeing this year from a casual fan perspective
I have no idea how much is coaching and how much is player execution:

1. Offense if more stagnant. There's very little movement compared to what we're used to at BYU. I think about Tyler Haws working his butt off without the ball to get himself open as the poster child for this. I think about Pope's constant motion offenses. There's very little of that this year. I'm not sure if it's by design, and we're trying to get open shots some other way, but to this point in the season, what we're doing is less effective and looks stagnant.

2. #1 leads too often to running out the shot clock and having to force bad shots to beat the buzzer. To make things worse, it seems like we do nothing and run 15-20 seconds off the shot clock before we attempt to get into some type of offensive set.

3. It seems like we're trying to rely on our players on offense beating a defender 1 on 1 to create shots. Other than Saunders, Catchings, Demin and Fous in the post, I haven't seen most of our team be able to do that. Knell got completely shut down last night because he had zero room to shoot, and he doesn't have the ability to create his own shot.

4. The defense is gradually getting better, but we're struggling to keep our defense intact for the full shot clock. We give up way too many wide, wide, open 3s in the last 5-7 seconds of the shot clock. Earlier in the year, we were giving up wide open 3s basically at the will of our opponents, so it's an improvement. But at this point in the season, we're capable of playing solid defense for the length of an NBA shot clock, not an NCAA shot clock.

KY is a smart guy, and he'll figure some things out and adjust to the college game and not having NBA level athletes at every position. I'm still excited about the future of BYU basketball, but it's pretty clear that there are going to be some growing pains and the need to develop (both players and coaches) throughout the season. I thought that we'd know what the ceiling for this team was by the end of January. It looks like it may take longer than that.
