I’m seeing a lot of anger about the broadcast. But here’s the thing.
College football is NOT about the team who wins the most. See Herbstreits recent comments about playoff teams. Broadcasts are not about the games. They are about the stories that bring eyeballs. Awards are not given to the best athletes and coaches. They are given to the best stories.

My brother once told me that he was annoyed watching American Ninja Warrior because only 30% of the show was actually showing the ninja runs. And, prime time Olympics has become the same thing. Well, I hate to say it, but college football has been that way for a very long time.

So why was the broadcast so one sided last night? Because the script that ESPN wrote was for this to be a Colorado game that BYU happened to play in. ESPN chose their teams that were going to be storylines this season: Miami, Georgia, Boise State, Alabama, Ohio State, Notre Dame, etc.

They had chosen Utah and Oklahoma State to be storylines lines as well, but when those teams didn’t pan out they scrambled with other BIG12 teams, but couldn’t find anything that stuck. As BYU fans were screaming “but we have great stories!” But the thing is, ESPN didn’t agree.

My son’s football coach once said “the best kids don’t get scholarships, the best scene kids get scholarships.” It’s all about the story folks, and ESPN liked Colorado’s story.
