My Dad used to have his hand in a family cattle ranch as one of his hobbies. He had an office job and bought/sold a few angus on the side just for fun. He and his brother who ran the ranch used to have a few in the BYU cattle program and we'd go check on them from time to time out at the BYU Ag facility near the mouth of Spanish Fork Canyon. It was near the Little Acorn and sometimes we'd stop and get shakes there. I remember the corrals were always super muddy - the bulls and heifers would be walking around in like 5-6 inches of a mud/crap quagmire. And they had magnetic tags in their ears that allowed them individual access to feeder boxes so they all got the exact same amount of the same feed.
We went out once to check on them; me, Dad, Grandpa Penske, and my cousin who was my same age. Cousin and I were about 7-8 at the time. Grandpa Penske was an amazing guy, one of my role models - he was an absolute work horse who ran a ranch, never had much money, but raised eight kids and sent all his boys on missions. He was also the Branch President, Bishop, Stake President, Mission President, and Patriarch. All while serving on the school board and in the state house of representatives. I don't ever remember getting a gift or present from him or Grandma Penske, nor getting anything from them when they passed.
Anyway, while out at the facility Dad and Grandpa Penske were checking out the cattle and trying not to get too muddy. And for some reason they needed a gate that was out there to be open, it was a metal panel gate (think Powder River-style) that was all kids of jimmy-rigged and tied shut with bailing twine. So Dad asked cousin and I to get it open, and we were more than happy for the excuse to bust out our pocket knives and go to town on the thing.
While we were working on it Grandpa Penske came over, opened his wallet, and gave each of us a dollar bill. Being out with Dad and Grandpa at the facility was payment enough for us, but getting money out of the deal was a real bonus. I have no idea what I did with that dollar, to my knowledge it's probably the first one I ever earned and wasn't just given as allowance. Luckily I have the memory, but I'd kill to have that thing back now.
