I mean, it's been backfiring in many ways already. People are already looking askance at their twitter hate, "what's wrong with you, bro?"
But the fact that their "Fandom" is really based on hate for BYU means they aren't actually invested in their own team - it's just there to be the anti-BYU. We see there really wasn't sustainable viewership of their team (and others) to maintain the PAC, for example. utes don't put their money where their mouth is because their mouths belie their real motives.
Now that players can be paid in the NIL era, we see which fanbase is actually engaged in their own team. BYU fans are rabid about BYU. utah fans are also rabid about...BYU. But they can't give "negative" dollars. So BYU fans can pay for good players and utah will have to just watch BYU take those good players - even good ute players.
Karma seems to be righting the world.
