I mean on the surface, we have a guy coming back as a 5th year senior (we can talk about the JC thing another time) who was good, but not great last year. This is usually when BYU produces a very special season.
Jake though has limitations that other QBs dont' have, mainly his throwing motion. It is not conducive to touch and accuracy (which is why they try and coach out that type of throwing motion from QBs). Retzlaff's biggest issues this past year? Touch and accuracy.
I think Retzlaff has the mental makeup and work ethic to make the jump. I am just skeptical based on his throwing motion as I can't remember seeing a QB with his throwing motion become proficient at those things. Now certainly he could be the first (that I know of). Golfers like Jim Furyk have horrible form but have found a way for it to be consistent. But until I see it I will be skeptical about it.
If you get an improved Retzlaff next season, our chances of being really good are high (Yes we have major issues around our D-line and O-line that also have been concerned). Let's hope he can successfully make the jump.
