It's been funny to see the East Coast NBA/NFL-centric media be baffled by AJ's
decision.

Seeing Stephen A's reaction, Rich Eisen's reaction, Dan Patrick's etc. etc. has been awesome.

I think sometimes in our BYU/college sports bubble we forget how little people know about us.

Several years ago my wife and I stayed at B and B in Maine and when we went down for breakfast we sat at the same table as a couple from Connecticut. Super nice and normal people. When we said we were from Utah, they sat silently for a second and then the wife said 'isn't that near Iowa?' - She was totally serious. They just had no context to anything out West or even think about us much at all. It's the famous quote from Mad Men when someone tells Don Draper he feels bad for him. Don replies 'I don't think about you at all.'

There are levels to this thing...

There are East Coast CFB fans who are SEC and maybe ACC fans who know who BYU is but view us as below them. Then there are East Coast NFL/NBA types who literally know nothing about us at all. The reason Stephen A brough up Duke/Carolina is because THAT'S ALL HE KNOWS about college basketball. That's it. He knows about Carolina v Duke. Rich Eisen knows even less. DP knows that Steve Young went to BYU and that's it. etc. etc.

That's why you see the breathless reactions to AJ (and to Belichick going to UNC). It's just unfathomable to the NFL/NBA-centric East Coast media. Guys who are Philly/Boston/ATL/New York/DC sports guys with NFL/NBA centric backgrounds and jobs just have no context for any of it.
