1st Half Comments
• Baker: Great half overall. It’s clear that he has lots to contribute, and will get better and better with PT, but it’s scary every time he dribbles the ball. His handle is not very good.
• BYU still giving up way too many open outside shots. They’ve gotta continue to tighten this up.
• Good minutes for Trey Stewart. Very active on defense with a steal and a tie up.
• Love how Hall can both hit open 3s and can also drive into the key and dish or score.
• BYU giving up too many offensive rebounds.
• Egor: Makes some spectacular plays (drive and left-handed dunk) and then makes a bad pass or poor decision. Overall he’s doing incredibly well, but still so much that he can still improve on. Crazy that he’s still so young.
• It’s clear that BYU is a VERY athletic team, but sometimes on offense the flow is not great. They are improving, but still lots of room for growth.
• Eight turnovers with 7 minutes left in the half. Way too many.
• Good minutes from Knell. Good shooting and good defense.
• Catchings a little bit invisible in the 1st half.
• Cool and weird visual: Traore (BYU center) rebounds and hands off to Demin (BYU PG) who is taller than Traore.
2nd Half Comments
• Catchings is not invisible anymore! 2 amazing 3s and a FT.
• BYU needs to learn to play tough defense without getting called for so many fouls.
• Barrage of 3-point shots gives BYU a 20-point lead.
• Baker a couple of great passes for layups, and a couple of nice drives.
Overall Comments
• BYU is a very good team, but the exciting thing is that they still have so much room for improvement. They will experience some bumps along the road as they continue to develop, but they are a team that no one is going to want to play. So many weapons. So much athleticism. So much talent. Just need to continue to improve.
• BYU up by 23 at one point, then fade significantly down the stretch, finally winning by 11. Part of that was they weren’t hitting shots like earlier, but they gotta figure out how to maintain large leads.
• Free throws MUCH better 12/16 (75%). That needs to continue to be an area of focus.
• Need continued emphasis on turnovers. BYU still committing way too many.
• There were stretches where BYU looked VERY good. If they can increase the length of those stretches they’ll be tough to beat.
• BYU still doesn’t have what I’d consider a go-to player—someone to go to when they absolutely have to have a bucket. At this point their best option is probably to put the ball in Demin’s hands, let him create and then either pass or shoot.
• Fun team to watch. I’m impressed by the depth of BYU. It appears that it will be a different player every game leading the scoring. That’s OK. Today’s game was a great example of how difficult BYU is to defend when the scoring is spread out among so many players.
• As fans we need to realize there will be some ups and downs with this team throughout the season and just enjoy the journey. I’m hopeful that by the end of the season BYU will be playing their best ball and will be able to compete with anyone.
