still one regular season game left, but looking forward to NCAA tournament I
realized/learned that the selection committee generally avoids inter-conference matchups for first and second rounds.

U of Utah is borderline in for being top 16 in country and hosting a quadrant for first and second rounds. Utah came and played at BYU in BYU quadrant a few times in past 5-10 years in NCAA tourney, but in those years U of U and BYU were in different conferences (Pac-X and WCC).

So even if U of U hosts the first round, I guess BYU wouldn't be bracketed to play there. Because of avoiding the possible in-conference second round matchup.

Two years ago BYU played at the Pitt quadrant in the first and second rounds and got swept by Pitt. So although they try to stick to geographical matchups, BYU starting at Pitt shows that doesn't work perfectly.

Other west or kind of western teams who might host a first round quadrant are Stanford, Texas, and Creighton. So perhaps BYU would go to one of those places. But BYU being sent to Pittsburgh 2 years ago means BYU could about be sent anywhere. Az St. is also in there as likely to be a top 16 seed, but for the conference rule BYU wouldn't be sent to Az St.
