Explain why the Coaches are failing miserably in game planning and having to …
… make so many adjustments after the game gets away from us?

As I scouted ASU prior to the game, 2 things seemed rather OBVIOUS to me even as an armchair QB:

1) BYU wasn’t going to establish any running game without FIRST attacking the ASU secondary!
2) Essential to contain Skattebo and force the ASU pass game to beat you.

I said PASS … PASS … PASS and we will win the game, yet the offense was put into critical pressure situations requiring perfect execution on ONE play just to keep drives alive. Give yourself and your best playmakers more opportunities … We could connect on 1 of 3 pass plays for 10 yards against ASU’s D all day long.

Yet ARod continued to run on 1st down, constantly getting behind the chains, and allowing ASU to dictate what we could do on Offense. The offense did NOT attack ASU’s obvious defensive weaknesses until the 2nd half by getting aggressive in the pass game and using tempo. By then, we were too far behind and playing catch up and that’s a lot to ask. Even I could predict the first half offensive debacle with the approach ARod took!

Defensively, you contain Skattebo and you beat ASU. Force ASU to beat you in the pass game rather than controlling the clock and the score in the first half – Hill didn’t load the box enough on defense in the first half, rather choosing to prevent the big play and forcing ASU to make plays all the way down the field. Usually a good philosophy except when Skattebo can get 5-6 yards almost every first down or time he ran the ball.

The coaches figured it out in the 2nd half BUT why in the h#ll can’t they see this in their scouting and go INTO the game with mostly the right approach, rather than figuring it out in the 2nd half?

Can someone who really knows explain this better to me???
