I think we can all identify Ute fans who do it the right way and still recognize that there is a culture problem
My across the street neighbor is one of the very best people I know and a huge Ute fan. We can talk trash, joke about the game, etc. and it never is personal. He is super helpful and just someone in general that I strive to be like. There are some accounts of people that went to the game and were surrounded by welcoming fans who were cool during the game--but even being surrounded by cool fans, BYU fans heard the student section chants and were yelled vulgar and derogatory things on their way in and out of the stadium. And certainly, there are BYU fans who act like jerks sometimes too, but there really is a culture problem at the U. Maybe some of the conflict is intrinsic between a state school and whose state's majority population is affiliated with a religion and a university that is the flagship of said religion that will never go away, but after this weekend it seems clear that the U does not do enough to try and change the ugly aspects of the rivalry.

What happened on the field is what makes the rivalry great, hard fought games with cardiac endings. In that way, this game will go down in lore as what makes the rivalry fun, but the U needs to do more to fix the culture around the program with the rivalry.
