Best Backpacking Trips in the Sierras
My brother and I are looking to do a four or five night backpacking trip next summer in the Sierras. We are looking at a few options including sections of the John Muir Trail and the Rae Lakes Loop. What advice does the board have?

Depends on what you are looking for. Do you prefer alpine environments above

Probably more high alpine environment. We want to be challenged.

I've done that one before. Awesome hike. A few thoughts:

Thanks for the insight. I’ve been targeting the high trail because they have the most daily permits

I can vouch for the bears at Thousand Island Lake. We had one get into our food supply the first night of our 7-day trek

Was this with a bear canister or before they were required?

We had bears come in our camp at Thousand Island when using bear cannisters.

they were required (this was 2007, I think) but my backpacking buddy didn't believe it was important to put all his food

paging Turd Ferguson....he's the resident expert since he lives in Owens Valley. IIRC he really likes the Rae Lakes Loop

Don't know if it's still this way but cottonwood pass was a way to bypass permit

First Sierra trip I ever did was Kearsarge Pass from Independence. Experienced the most surreal 1 AM t-storm camped

Twenty Lakes Basin is similar for people wanting to do the high Sierra portion
