I just encountered maybe the most ridiculous request by an automated phone service to authenticate me. This was for
E*Trade. It asked for my account number, so I entered it. Then it said for me to use the phone keypad to enter in my web password. Huh? You mean the 25 character randomly generated password for my account? Type that in using my phone’s keypad? What a completely ridiculous request.

Nevertheless, I opened my password manager to get the password in front of me and gave it a try. Unsurprisingly it didn’t work. It interrupted me halfway through to say “I’m sorry, I didn’t get that”, and then tried to direct me to a way to reset the password.

Ridiculous.

(Before you ask, I triple checked that the number that I called was indeed the right phone number. I got it directly from my E*trade account page after logging in).
