A theatrically-released, quality drama starring terrific actors, made for adults, rated PG — a very rare thing.
Soundtrack gets a little annoying and the plot is pretty creaky (lot of things that happen because the writer wants them to — appearance of a particular document, for example, is laughable), but actors are great. Fiennes, Tucci, etc., help paper over iffy plot developments.
I don't expect Catholics to be big fans though.
Also features what is, in retrospect, some of the funniest symbolism/foreshadowing I can recall.
