The new reality of the rivalry
Utah football has undeniably been successful over the past decade, led by a disciplined defense and an impressive head coach in Kyle Whittingham. Known for his brilliant defensive mind, Whittingham has made Utah a force in the Pac-12 and has rightfully earned respect for building a tough, competitive program. However, there’s also no denying that the rivalry with BYU has been charged with more than just competition. The University of Utah has made every effort to undermine and humiliate BYU, both on and off the field. The animosity between programs, which began in earnest during Urban Meyer’s tenure, introduced a level of toxicity to the rivalry that went beyond traditional school pride.

While Utah has enjoyed a period of success, we all know that sports are cyclical. Programs experience high points and low points, and it’s clear that both universities are now on different paths. Utah, as a commuter school, has a largely localized fan base that reflects its roots, while BYU’s influence extends nationally and internationally. With alumni and fans around the world, BYU has cultivated a brand and reputation that few schools can match, let alone a commuter program like Utah. Utah’s fan base often caters to local demographics, and even game advertisements, like bail bonds and DUI attorneys, reflect a different target audience. BYU, meanwhile, enjoys a prestigious following and the capacity to inspire and engage people from a vast range of backgrounds.

When it comes to achievements, BYU stands out in significant ways. We have a national championship and a Heisman Trophy, hallmarks of a successful program with national recognition. Although Utah recently earned back-to-back appearances in the Rose Bowl, both games ended in losses, a reflection of the challenges they still face when competing at the highest levels. Beyond the field, there have also been troubling reports about Utah’s internal culture, including allegations against defensive coordinator Morgan Scalley for racially insensitive behavior. In contrast, BYU’s program under Kalani Sitake has fostered an environment of kindness, discipline, and inclusivity. Sitake’s approach has not only built a competitive team but one that reflects BYU’s values, setting an example on and off the field.

The distinction between the programs couldn’t be clearer: BYU is building a legacy, culture, and brand that will continue to flourish in the Big 12. Meanwhile, Utah’s trajectory seems less certain, with issues both on and off the field that could be difficult to overcome. As fans of BYU, it’s time we rise above the rivalry and focus on where we’re headed. Our place is at the top, a top-tier institution with a global fan base and culture, while Utah settles back into its role as a commuter school in the Mountain West mold, alongside schools like Utah State, Wyoming, and other regional programs.
