I was a Dodger fan growing up (became a fan before mariners existed). Loved Fernando and all the dodgers.

Served my mission in Orange County from 90-92. One day we were riding around and made a stop at a Mexican bakery in La Habra and I see a guy in a beat up silver van. I did a double take and we kind of look at each other and I think that looks like Fernando. But of course I talk myself out of it. I assumed he’d have a much nicer ride.

A few days later I get a hold of the sports section of one of the newspapers and there is a big article about Fernando with a picture of him standing by his beat up silver van. I guess he was driving around to parks and practicing to try and get back in the league.

Just remembered that after his passing a few days ago. Fernando mania was a lot of fun and watching him pitch was something I loved as a teenager.
