I think it's 100% believable that Ludwig walked out on his own. He was probably
planning to retire in January anyway.
My guess is he just didn't have the patience to deal with whatever drama is happening behind the scenes and decided to call it a day a couple of months early. Now he can enjoy the holidays with his family rather than grind out a few more weeks at a job he isn't enjoying anymore.
