My two oldest are 5 and 7 year old boys. They have started asking about getting a Nintendo switch for Christmas. I figured I would never suggest or look at getting anything like that until they were old enough to figure out asking for it themselves, and apparently that time has come.

I haven't bought a game system in at least 20 years, or any Nintendo stuff since the Nintendo 64, so I'm a little out of the loop. Played some of the later systems from time to time from younger brothers getting them.

What exactly would I need to buy? Looks like there are different versions of the system?
The controllers look super small, do I buy more of those controllers or do I get different ones?
Any game recommendations?
Any peripherals that are popular?
Would the game system connect to a computer monitor with an hdmi?
Anything else I need to know to make sure the system is ready to play christmas morning (i.e. updates?)
Is the current system about to be obsolete?
