You'll remember that TSMC built a brand-new plant in Arizona largely with the help of Federal funding from the CHIPS 2022 bill.

It's not apple's most advanced iOS chip, but it's close. The new Iphone 16 has the A18 chip, and Arizona is making the A16. It has a 4/5 nm chip process with 16 billion transistors (up from 15 Billion from the A15) meaning it's near TSMC's most advanced processing. This makes sense given that the Arizona plant is brand new and should have been designed and stocked with their latest and greatest knowledge and assembly. The article suggests when fully optimized, the Arizona manufacturing yields should be as efficient as Taiwan.

Given how concentrated the world's chip manufacturing were in a geopolitical hot zone, it's absolutely a huge deal to see TSMC successfully diversifying around the world. And not just anywhere, but the US of freaking A
