The Air Force was always known as the service with the good golf courses. That joke was always told that the first thing built on an Air Force Base was the golf course.

After being enlisted in the Army previously, I commissioned in the Air Force in 2000, finishing my training and arriving at my first duty station, the beautiful McChord Air Force Base near Tacoma, WA in the spring of 2001. My first few month I was happily surprised at how many sponsored semi official golf scrambles and such there were. It seems like there was always some fundraiser via golfing that the office would support: or occasionally we would just go with a couple of guys from the office as soon as 4:00 hit.

That way of life ended a few months later with 9/11.
I think I golfed two or three times total in my remaining 19 years with the Air Force, And never again did I see an office participating in a golf scramble or similar. Ops tempo greatly increased, people were constantly deployed, And the Air Force became a lot more intent on operating with and behaving like the other services, as the focus on joint operations increased.

I've tried a couple times since retiring to golf, but I am way crappier than I remember being in that glorious summer of 2001.
