After removing all emotion and having the ability to rewind some plays multiple times, here are some random thoughts:
- Retzlaff was bad. Really bad. And I take no satisfaction in typing this, as I REALLY want him to do well. But even aside from the 3 turnovers, he didn't play well. Several balls thrown into the dirt. Some poor decisions. A missed TD throw. Even some completions that were off-target or thrown into coverage.
- Arod's philosophy seems to be all about ball distribution - maybe to a fault. I don't understand why we aren't getting the ball to our best playmakers. Roberts and Lassiter were rarely targeted and I don't understand it.
- As well as the defense played, I was super unimpressed by the SMU QBs. SMU had scoring opportunities and big play potential that better QBs will capitalize on. I like our defensive improvements, but we have seen some fools gold the first few weeks. This isn't meant as a disparaging comment - just a warning that we will face much more competent QBs and offenses. We'll be hard-pressed to keep any BIG12 teams under 24 points, which means our offense better get its act together.
- I sure love our LB room. Kelly has closing speed I haven't seen since KVN. And Glasker is an absolute star in the making.
- I'm not sure what to think of our OL at this point. I think they are improved, but how much? Hard to gauge at this point.
- Keanu Hill's contribution has been minimal so far this year, and I'm surprised.
