I actually don’t mind pre-season rankings, BUT…
I do mind when they anchor teams in after losses.

You want to rank teams when we have very little information? Fine. But you better darn well reshuffle heavily in the first few games when data starts coming in.

Notre dame should fall out of the top 25. NIU is a fine team but losing at home to them is not top 25 worthy. At the very least notre dame should be in the 20-25 range if they do stay in. They won’t though. They’ll be top 15 still.

Oregon barely beat Idaho and narrowly escaped against Boise. Boise is actually a good team but Idaho isn’t. And two narrow home escapes are not impressive for a top 10 team. Sure they should stay in the top 25 but not top 10.

That’s my problem with early polls. Go ahead and do them but the idea that you don’t really drop much with a loss or a close win over a bad team is dumb. Have some courage AP voters and reshuffle things over the first few games when the data says you should. Anchoring on preseason numbers is asinine.
