To fully set the stage, after struggling to throw the ball in the first half, we opened the second with 3 straight pass attempts: an incompletion, 57 yards to Lassiter, and the first of two egregious interceptions. Over the next 5 possessions, we averaged two passing attempts per possession.
We went run based. We went run based with an offense that lost the starting RB, the primary backup was also hobbled, and the o-line was struggling opening running lanes vs SMU. But we went run based because our passing game was struggling even worse.
So here's the logical disconnect: if we swap to a run based offense because we're not getting what we need from our passing QB, then shouldn't we be using our running QB at that point? The one who is bigger, stronger, faster, and by every account from our coaches the much better runner of the two QBs?
It is saying something that objective observers believe Retzlaff is the better passer than Bohannon. That's a pretty big indictment of Bohannon. But if we're in a game where we've given up on the passing game anyway, seems like we should be using the running QB at that point.
