I don’t buy the fragile psyche argument for not giving Bohannon a live game eval
To be fair, I’m not calling for the back up or claiming Bohannon is better. I’m simply pointing out that we know what have with Retz. We have a 6 game body of live work that shows that he does fine against crummy teams, is mobile, has flashes of potential, but overall he’s a 50% completion turnover machine against real opponents. On the other hand, we don’t have live game reps with Bohannon. Maybe he’s a gamer. Maybe he’s not. But we don’t know.

Wyoming isn’t good. So if they play Retz, of course he is going to look great again. That won’t give coaches any more information than we already have. He made enough mistakes against SMU that it would be very reasonable to tell him that he needs to work harder and clean up his ball control in order to be the starter, and that they are going to give Bohannon a look against Wyoming.

If Bohannon doesn’t look amazing against Wyoming, then we at least know that we’ve got two mediocre QBs. Question settled, move on, try to optimize what we do have.

But by starting Bohannon, it sets accountability and lights a fire for Retz to get his head right. He’s a competitor.

On the other hand, if Bohannon does really well against Wyoming, you give him a chance to prove himself at home against Kstate. If he struggles in the first half, then you then put in a hungry Retz who knows he’s got to take care of the ball and play smarter if he’s going to keep his job.

What am I missing here?
