a coworker who had come in for some counseling. I guess he's going through some personal issues (seem to mostly stem from bad life choices) but that's one of the things we're given at least some training in and asked to help address to the extent we're able and think appropriate.
I listened to this guy, asked a few probing questions and then as he looked at me expectantly, I started to share a few thoughts with him. I at least superficially covered cognitive behavioral therapy and how simple actions we take can affect our mood. That seemed to go over ok, so I asked if he was familiar with positive and negative feedback loops. That's where things got weird fast.
He looked visibly agitated and was breathing increasingly heavily, got up from his chair and started pacing quickly around the room and finally started shouting "I don't want feedback! Not even positive feedback!!!" and he seemed really unhinged at this point. I had no choice but to call security and have him escorted out of the building. I feel bad 'cause I'm sure this won't help with the emotional issues, but I think he's being let go next week.
