I am NOT a "Metro by T-Mobile customer" and never have been. Over the weekend, I received in the mail 4 checks from "Assurant/Metro by T-Mobile," saying that I am owed a refund for "cancelling my device protection coverage." The checks are issued for four different phone numbers, none of which are mine, and the amounts of the checks are $.09, $.10, $.10 and $.30. Small change. The checks are issued using my middle name as my last name, but using my first name.
I've called Metro by T-Mobile, and its insurer, Assurant, and nobody seems to care that they are being defrauded. They take the info and say a manager may get back to you.
My main concern is that my personal info is out there being used to open cellular accounts, but when T-Mobile checks the accounts, ALL four numbers are being served by Cingular wireless (again, not my carrier). For that reason, they cannot see the name and other info of the person who set up the accounts/numbers.
It's crazy . . . I have refund checks issued in my partial name, to my current address, for 4 phone numbers that are not mine . . . and the refund checks were sent by a carrier/insurer that do not service the subject phone numbers. What a Charlie Foxtrot.
Other than the obvious (monitor my personal accounts and info.), what would you do in this situation.
