going after high school recruits. If the rumors about Catchings and Crawford transferring are true, it’s hard to see the win in bringing a lot of guys like that in. They were both pretty highly recruited and as a result expected to play a lot. But coming into an experienced team that was built to win right away there didn’t end up being a realistic way for them to contribute.
So at the end of the day you spend a ton of time buttering kids up and then fork out hundreds of thousands of dollars to bring them in. And then they leave after one year frustrated without ever bringing much to the table.
I think more and more coaches are seeing it’s better to get guys like that on the rebound that have a more realistic view of themselves and are ready to do what it takes to contribute to a winner. It also goes without saying that the coaches have a much better idea who the kids are after they’ve played a couple years against better competition
