So, BYU is running an offensive system that values the 3-point shot as a difference maker in basketball - take a lot of them, fight for great shots, and make a lot of them is the hope. Alabama showed last night what that system can do when running really well. And, BYU has been able to do that for much of the season.
BYU loses four players (minimum) for next season to graduation - three of them have been consistent 3-point shot makers for BYU this year. Trevin Knell leads that group, probably your leading 3-point specialist on the team, and then you have Mawot Mag (39.7%) and Trey Stewart (36.4%) who both played a lot of minutes and actually both shot pretty well from 3-point range next season.
One major issue for next year has to be - who will be taking and making those 3-point shots? We need more than a couple guys who can shoot and make 3s in this offense.
Candidates and Possibilities
* Richie Saunders - will be the #1 3-point option I would think. Shot 43.2% from 3 on the season, was even higher at times. Elite shooter.
* Egor Demin - if Demin were to come back, then he has the opportunity to shoot a lot of 3s. Only 27.3% on the year. Has been streaky in this category; solid in some games, cold as ice in many others. I would think this has to be a big point of emphasis for him if he comes back.
* Dallin Hall - Hall has been at 35.3% from 3 this season - respectable but also been streaky. Steady enough that you can trust him to take this shot but this is about the same rate as the last two years. Would hope to see a jump from him as a senior.
* Dawson Baker - at 38% from 3 on the year, and his level of experience as a senior, my guess is that Baker will be given the opportunity to do a lot of shooting from 3-point range. Probably the next best option behind Saunders.
* Kanon Catchings - if Kanon comes back, he was at 35% on the season and this is his favorite shot. Actually, probably the highest potential on the team as a 3-point shooter. Don't know if we'll get to realize it though.
* Mihailo Boskovic - this is a shot he can make and he loves the 3 - but just made 26.8%. Unless he can make a big jump, you probably don't depend on him for lots of 3s.
So, that's one elite shooter, 3 decent shooters, and two not great shooters. We need more 3-point firepower, I think. Other possibilities but we don't know who is sticking:
* Elijah Crawford - Not enough 3-point shooting this year to get a sense. Shot 45% from 3 as a senior in high school, but just 22.2% on 9 attempts this year. Not enough information. A big question mark.
* Brody Kozlowski - Again, volume too low, but was 50% on 4 attempts this year. Billed as a shooter, great stats in high school.
* AJ Dybantsa - Couldn't actually find too much on AJ's 3-point percentage, but it was 41% in one summary of a few games. You can bet he will be a volume 3-point shooter.
If Kozlowski and Dybantsa could be two solid 3-point shooters for us next sure, then that's quite a bit of help in the long-range shooting category. It would really help BYU to continue adding some elite shooting, as this offense seems to value it so highly.
