Snooty academics can be dismissive about their utility, and if one takes a cosmic look at them, they are somewhat over-emphasized, but in terms of devotion to one's alma mater, few other aspects bind and bond alumni together.

BYU is wise to spend a lot of money keeping alumni bonded through sports. Not many of us love BYU because of the family education department.
